Email and text messages have become a major distraction in many workplaces. However, most employers have problems in determining how to control this interruption in productivity.
Forty-one percent of companies involved in a recent survey evidence point to pay someone to monitor employee email. Forestry Research found 40 percent of companies monitor electronic mail using a full-time employee. Even with this high rate of follow-up, only 14 per cent of employers had the courage to actually discipline a message abuser.
The right of privacy is one of the considerations of an employer. Although it is clear that the mail delivered by the postal service belongs to the employer, even if treated as confidential or personal, there is less clarity when it comes to e-mail or text.
The city of Detroit is facing this problem when the embarrassing text messages were made public during an investigation of this ill-by the Mayor.
